SERRA SAN QUIRICO (AN)-ST. ELENA ABBEY

Mystical light in the St. Elena Abbey in Serra San Quirico (AN) - Italy.

Founded in 1005 by San Romualdo, Sant 'Elena became the most' important Benedictine Abbey of political, civil and social of the Vallesina.
In the twelfth century it boasted the possession of about 50 churches and 10 buildings including castles and villas with all the outbuildings. In 1180 it joined the Hermitage of Camaldoli becoming a part of the Camaldolese congregation.

The importance of the Abbey was increased by the right of the abbot to exercise civil and criminal jurisdiction, including the right of life and death.

The territory that goes from the Gola della Rossa to Moie, including the Castle of Masaccio (now Cupramontana) and the House in San Marcello, was under its jurisdiction.

The decline began in the fifteenth century when Pope Innocent VIII took, from the Camaldolese Order, the abbey appointing an abbot Commendatory in the person of Cardinal Giovanni Colonna (Commendatory 'cause while having all the powers of the Abbot was not a monk belonging to an order and was not required to reside in the Abbey).
On April 6, 1816 latter gave in emphyteusis the Abbey with all the benefits attached to the family PIANESI, which enfranchised, as a result, in its favor the emphyteusis thus becoming the legitimate owner.


Fondata nel 1005 da San Romualdo, Sant' Elena divenne la piu' importante Abbazia benedettina della vallesina sul piano politico, civile e sociale.
Nel XII secolo vantava il possesso di circa 50 chiese e 10 edifici fra castelli e ville con tutti i beni annessi. Nel 1180 si uni' all' Eremo di Camaldoli inserendosi nella congregazione Camaldolese.

L' importanza dell' Abbazia era accresciuta dal diritto dell' Abate di esercitare la giurisdizione civile e penale, incluso il diritto di vita e di morte.

Il territorio che va dalla Gola della Rossa fino a Moie, compreso il Castello del Massaccio (ora Cupramontana) e quello di Antico presso San Marcello, era sotto la sua giurisdizione.

La decadenza ebbe inizio nel XV secolo quando il papa Innocenzo VIII tolse all' ordine Camaldolese l' Abbazia nominando un Abate Commendatario nella persona del cardinale Giovanni Colonna (Commendatario perche' pur avendo tutti i poteri dell' Abate non era un monaco appartenente ad un ordine e non era obbligato a risiedere nell' Abbazia).
Il 6 Aprile 1816 quest' ultimo cedette in enfiteusi l' Abbazia con tutti i beni annessi alla famiglia PIANESI che affranco' in seguito a proprio favore l' enfiteusi divenendo cosi' la legittima proprietaria.
